Avoid overcrowding, keep pumps and plumbing clear, and monitor water temperature throughout the day. When appropriate, refresh the well with clean water from the area being fished and handle bait gently with wet hands or a small net.
A dependable livewell system is part of fishing preparation. Inspect pumps, strainers and electrical connections before the trip rather than at the first stop.
Water temperature can climb quickly in a livewell while the boat sits near a Fairhope shoreline or runs between Mobile Bay stops. Shade the well when practical, avoid adding hot deck water and watch for bait crowding, foam or sluggish movement. A functioning pump does not always mean the bait has enough oxygen.
Before launching, test both fill and recirculation modes and keep a simple backup such as a portable aerator. Healthy bait is especially valuable around Perdido Pass, Dauphin Island and other current-heavy areas where lively presentation often matters more than carrying an oversized quantity.
