Outboard maintenance for Gulf Coast boaters

Salt, heat and year-round use make consistent maintenance essential. Follow your engine manufacturer's hour-based schedule, but also account for calendar time and operating conditions.

After regular use

Flush when appropriate, inspect the propeller and lower unit, check fluids and look for corrosion, leaks or damaged wiring. Keep batteries charged and terminals clean.

Scheduled service

Engine oil, filters, gear lubricant, fuel-system components, water pumps and spark plugs should be serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule and inspected more often when use is severe.

Do not wait for a failure

Hard starting, warning alarms, unusual vibration or declining performance deserve prompt diagnosis. Early attention usually protects both your season and your repair budget.
